Homemade Meat Sauce ~ 2 Meat Sauce for Pasta

This hearty meat sauce is full of delicious layers of flavor. It’s a little different than a traditional Italian meat sauce but no less hearty and delicious. Serve it over pasta with an easy green salad along with cheddar bay biscuits or garlic bread

How to Make Homemade Meat Sauce:

  • Cook ground sausage in a skillet over medium heat, crumbling as it cooks to brown well on all sides. Drain if needed and set aside.

  • Dice smoked sausage and set aside.

  • Coat a large skillet with olive oil and cook diced onions, bell peppers and minced garlic over medium heat, stirring often.

  • Continue to cook until vegetables are softened, about 10 minutes.

  • Stir in tomato sauce and heavy cream.

  • Add cooked ground sausage and diced smoked sausage.

  • Next, add basil, thyme and oregano.

  • Stir in brown sugar, salt and pepper.

  • Cook over low heat for about 20 minutes, stirring often.

  • Serve over cooked pasta. 

How to Store and Reheat:

Store cooled meat sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 4 days or freeze up to 3 months.

Reheat sauce in a pan over medium-low heat, stirring often until heated through.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground Sausage
  • Breakfast Sausage
  • or
  • Sweet Italian Sausage
  • 1 pound smoked sausage
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cups diced onions
  • 1 cup diced bell peppers
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 4 cups roasted tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar optional
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Pasta for Serving: 1 pound cooked spaghetti or 20 ounces frozen cheese ravioli cooked

Instructions

  • Cook ground sausage in a skillet over medium heat, stirring and crumbling until well browned. Remove to a bowl and set aside.
  • Dice smoked sausage and set aside.
  • Add olive oil to a large skillet and cook onions, bell peppers and garlic over medium heat, stirring often until vegetables are softened.
  • Add tomato sauce and heavy cream, mixing to combine.
  • Stir in ground sausage and smoked sausage.
  • Add basil, thyme, oregano, brown sugar, salt and pepper and stir until combined.
  • Continue to cook over medium-low heat for about 20 minutes.
  • Serve over cooked pasta.

Notes
