Step-By-Step Directions for Hamburger Steaks and Gravy



- Mix the hamburger steaks:
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, minced garlic, spicy brown mustard, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt and pepper. Mix just until combined and shape into thick patties.


- Cook the patties:
Heat bacon grease in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown hamburger steaks 3–4 minutes per side until nicely seared. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

- Make the gravy:
Add butter and sliced onions to the skillet. Cook, stirring often, until onions are soft and caramelized. Stir in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes.


Whisk in broth a little at a time until smooth. Stir in Kitchen Bouquet, onion powder, salt and pepper.
- Simmer:
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over the top, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until patties are cooked through.

Serve:
Spoon hamburger steaks and plenty of onion gravy over mashed potatoes for a complete comfort food dinner that the whole family will enjoy.

- 2 pounds ground beef I used a mixture of lean ground chuck and ground brisket
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons bacon grease or olive oil
For the Gravy
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 onions sliced thin
- ⅓ cup all purpose flour
- 3 cups broth beef or chicken
- 1 teaspoon kitchen bouquet optional
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- mashed potatoes for serving
Instructions

- Melt butter in the skillet adding sliced onions. Cook, stirring often, until onions are soft and caramelized. Stir in the flour, cooking for 1–2 minutes. Whisk in broth a little at a time until smooth. Stir in Kitchen Bouquet if using with onion powder, salt and pepper.
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over the top, reduce heat to low,. Simmer for about 15 minutes or until patties are cooked through to 165° using a digital meat thermometer.

Notes
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
- Reheating: Reheat in a pan over medium heat, adding a little broth to thin the gravy. Turn patties after a few minutes and stir the gravy until heated through.
- Variations: Add sautéd mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.
