  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons bacon grease or olive oil

For the Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 onions sliced thin
  • cup all purpose flour
  • 3 cups broth beef or chicken
  • 1 teaspoon kitchen bouquet optional
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • mashed potatoes for serving

Instructions

  • n a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, minced garlic, spicy brown mustard, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt and pepper. Mix just until combined and shape into 5, thick patties.
  • Heat bacon grease in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown hamburger steaks 3–4 minutes per side until nicely seared. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • Melt butter in the skillet adding sliced onions. Cook, stirring often, until onions are soft and caramelized. Stir in the flour, cooking for 1–2 minutes. Whisk in broth a little at a time until smooth. Stir in Kitchen Bouquet if using with onion powder, salt and pepper.
  • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over the top, reduce heat to low,. Simmer for about 15 minutes or until patties are cooked through to 165° using a digital meat thermometer.
  • Spoon hamburger steaks and plenty of onion gravy over mashed potatoes for a complete comfort food dinner.

Notes

  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat in a pan over medium heat, adding a little broth to thin the gravy. Turn patties after a few minutes and stir the gravy until heated through.
  • Variations: Add sautéd mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.
