Ingredients Needed:
- Granny Smith Apples
- Brown Sugar
- Ground Cinnamon
- Butter
- Puff Pastry
- All Purpose Flour
- Egg
- Water
- Powdered Sugar
- Milk
- Vanilla Extract
How to Make Apple Turnovers:
- Peel and dice apples and add to a bowl.
- Add brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Mix to combine diced apples with cinnamon and sugar.
- Melt butter in a large skillet.
- Add apples and cook over medium heat, stirring often about 5 minutes or until apples are softened.
- Place in a bowl and cool completely. Pop the bowl in the freezer for about 10 minutes to speed up the cooling process.
- Remove one sheet of puff pastry from the refrigerator, leaving one sheet in the refrigerator to stay chilled. Lightly flour a clean surface and place the puff pastry over the flour. Dust the top lightly with a bit more flour.
- Using a rolling pin, roll the puff pastry into about a 10 x 12 inch rectangle.
- Cut the puff pastry into 4 squares using a pizza wheel.
- Beat egg and water together in a small bowl.
- Spoon apple pie filling into the center of each square.
- Brush the edges of each square with egg wash.
- Fold puff pastry over apple filling into a triangle. Use a fork to crimp the edges to seal.
- Place turnovers onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet, spacing about 3 inches in between.
- Use a sharp knife to cut a couple of small slits in the top of each pastry.
- Brush all over with egg wash.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Repeat with remaining ingredients.
- Mix powdered sugar with milk and vanilla extract in a small bowl with a whisk until smooth.
- Drizzle over apple turnovers.
- Serve immediately or at room temperature.
Air Fryer Directions:
- Preheat air fryer at 400° for 5 minutes.
- Place turnovers into an air fryer basket with space in between. My basket held 2 at a time. Keep remaining uncooked turnovers in refrigerator until ready to cook.
- Cook for 7- 8 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool on a wire rack, drizzle with icing.
- Repeat with remaining ingredients.
Recipe Variations:
- Classic apple turnovers can be sprinkled with turbinado sugar or coarse sugar before baking.
- Skip the powdered sugar icing and drizzle with caramel sauce before serving for caramel apple turnovers.
- Substitute canned apple pie filling for the simple apple filling. Dice the filling and mix in 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon or apple pie spice.
How to Freeze Apple Turnovers:
- Prepare turnovers but do not brush with egg wash. Place in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place in the freezer for about 2 hours or until frozen solid.
- Transfer turnovers to a zip top freezer bag and freeze up to 6 weeks.
- Frozen turnovers do not need to thaw before baking. Place on a lined baking sheet, cook 20 minutes.
How to Store Apple Turnovers:
Store at room temperature in a zip top bag or airtight container at room temperature up to 2 days.
