Apple Turnovers

Apple Turnovers are a super simple homemade apple dessert to make any time of year. Flaky and delicious puff pastry filled with sweet apple filling. This recipe is quick and easy in the oven or make them in the air fryer!

We can’t get enough of these apple desserts and delicious apple turnovers are our new favorite. They are so easy to make and would be a great addition to any holiday table. I especially love that they can be made ahead and frozen to bake and enjoy anytime the craving strikes.

How to Make Apple Turnovers

  1. Peel and dice apples and add to a bowl.
  2. Add brown sugar and cinnamon.
  3. Mix to combine diced apples with cinnamon and sugar.
  4. Melt butter in a large skillet.
  5. Add apples and cook over medium heat, stirring often about 5 minutes or until apples are softened.
  6. Place in a bowl and cool completely. Pop the bowl in the freezer for about 10 minutes to speed up the cooling process.

  1. Remove one sheet of puff pastry from the refrigerator, leaving one sheet in the refrigerator to stay chilled. Lightly flour a clean surface and place the puff pastry over the flour. Dust the top lightly with a bit more flour.
  2. Using a rolling pin, roll the puff pastry into about a 10 x 12 inch rectangle.
  3. Cut the puff pastry into 4 squares using a pizza wheel.

  1. Beat egg and water together in a small bowl.
  2. Spoon apple pie filling into the center of each square.

  1. Brush the edges of each square with egg wash.
  2. Fold puff pastry over apple filling into a triangle. Use a fork to crimp the edges to seal.
  3. Place turnovers onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet, spacing about 3 inches in between.
  4. Use a sharp knife to cut a couple of small slits in the top of each pastry.
  5. Brush all over with egg wash.

  1. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

  1. Mix powdered sugar with milk and vanilla extract in a small bowl with a whisk until smooth.

  1. Drizzle over apple turnovers.
  2. Serve immediately or at room temperature.

Air Fryer Directions

  1. Preheat air fryer at 400° for 5 minutes.

  1. Place turnovers into an air fryer basket with space in between. My basket held 2 at a time. Keep remaining uncooked turnovers in refrigerator until ready to cook.
  2. Cook for 7- 8 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Cool on a wire rack, drizzle with icing.
  4. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

Recipe Variations for Turnovers

  • Classic apple turnovers can be sprinkled with turbinado sugar or coarse sugar before baking.
  • Skip the powdered sugar icing and drizzle with caramel sauce before serving for caramel apple turnovers.
  • Substitute canned apple pie filling for the simple apple filling. Dice the filling and mix in 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon or apple pie spice.

How to Freeze Apple Turnovers

  • Prepare turnovers but do not brush with egg wash. Place in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place in the freezer for about 2 hours or until frozen solid.
  • Transfer turnovers to a zip top freezer bag and freeze up to 6 weeks.
  • Frozen turnovers do not need to thaw before baking. Place on a lined baking sheet, cook 20 minutes.

How to Store Apple Turnovers

Store at room temperature in a zip top bag or airtight container at room temperature up to 2 days.

  • 2 granny smith apples peeled and diced (about 2 cups)
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
