Swiss Steak ~ Budget Friendly Comfort Food

Swiss steak is a tasty meal that is a family favorite for any day of the week. The steak is falling apart tender in a hearty tomato sauce that is so good served over creamy mashed potatoes. 

Ingredients for Swiss Steak

Ingredients Needed:

  • Boneless Chuck Steak or Round Steak
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Kosher Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Olive Oil
  • Diced Onions
  • Minced Garlic
  • Diced Bell Peppers
  • Shredded Carrots
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Water
  • Dried Oregano
  • Dried Thyme
  • Dried Basil

How to Make Swiss Steak:

Pound steak to about 1/4 inch thick using a meat mallet.

  • Dredge steak into flour on both sides and season with salt and pepper. 
  • Add olive oil to a dutch oven or deep skillet and place over medium heat.
  • When oil is hot, add the steak and cook about 5 minutes per side until well browned. 
  • Remove to steak and set aside.

  • Add more olive oil to the skillet and cook onions, garlic, bell peppers and carrots over medium heat, stirring often. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 10 minutes.
  • Add tomato sauce and water, stirring to combine.
  • Season with salt, pepper, oregano, thyme and basil, stirring until combined.

  • Return steak to the pan and cover with sauce, cooking for about 5 minutes.
  • Cover and lower to simmer.
  • Cook 30 minutes to 1 hour until steak is tender.

  • Remove steak to a cutting board and slice thin or shred.

  • Return to sauce and stir well.

  • Serve steak and sauce over mashed potatoes, rice or pasta.

  • Yield: 4 – 6 Servings
  • Storage: Store leftover steak in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
  • Reheat: Add steak and sauce to a pan and cook over medium heat, stirring often until heated through.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 - 2 pounds boneless chuck steak or round steak
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt divided
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper divided
