I grew up making vats of traditional coleslaw for our family’s catfish restaurant and it continues to be a favorite fresh salad or just about any meal.

Sweet Coleslaw ~ Traditional Coleslaw with Sweet Homemade Dressing

My kids love the sweet coleslaw from KFC so they asked me to come up with a homemade version that everyone loved even more than the restaurant version. If you start with a bag of slaw mix, this is one easy side dish!

Ingredients Needed for KFC Coleslaw Copycat Recipe

  • Coleslaw Mix 
  • Mayonnaise
  • Sour Cream
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Dry Mustard
  • Kosher Salt
  • Pepper

How to Make Sweet Coleslaw

  1. In a serving bowl, make the coleslaw dressing. Add the mayo, sour cream, apple cider vinegar, dry mustard, salt and pepper.

  1. Whisk together until smooth.

  1. Mix in coleslaw mix, stirring until well combined.

  1. Coleslaw can be served immediately or covered and refrigerated until ready to serve.

How to Make Coleslaw Ahead

Make dressing up to 3 days in advance and keep in a covered container. Make the coleslaw up to 24 hours in advance.

How to Store Coleslaw

Store in a covered container up to 2 days, stir before serving.

It goes with practically any meal and is always a favorite for summer cookouts. This recipe is inspired by sweet KFC Coleslaw but it’s creamier and even more delicious.

  • ¾ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon fresh ground pepper
  • 14 oz slaw mix

    1. It’s a mix of shredded green cabbage, red cabbage, and carrots. The mix I buy typically is predominantly green cabbage with a little bit of the other two for color.

    2. It’s just shredded cabbage with some slivered carrots. I just chop cabbage and don’t use carrots. You need about half a head of a medium head of cabbage.
