Mini Barbecue Meat Pies dipped in homemade barbecue sauce

We are more about the food than the football around our house these days and today’s recipe is mind-blowing delicious! My husband and son are major meatball lovers and this was their creation. We all worked together and the outcome was EPIC.

After making our Easy Smoked Meatloaf, we have been dying to try grilled meatballs and they turned out great. This recipe has quite a few steps but I promise this will be the hit of the party!

How to Make Barbecue Meat Pies:

Meatballs ready for the grill

  •  Prepare Grill with an off set fire.
  • Add ground chuck, oats, egg, onion, garlic and barbecue sauce to a bowl.
  • Mix dry seasonings together and add to bowl. 
  • Using your hands, blend the mixture together. 
  • Form into meatballs and place on a Grill Pan
  • Place on heated grill and shut the lid.

Cook at 325-350 for about 15-20 minutes or until meatballs reach 165 degrees. 

Barbecue Meatballs for Mini Meat Pies

Remove from grill and baste with homemade barbecue sauce. 

Pie Crust for Meat Pies

Cut pie crust into 2 1/2 – 3 inch circles using a biscuit cutter. 

How to make meat pies for appetizers with meatballs and mozzarella cheese

Top a pie crust circle with about a teaspoon of mozzarella cheese and half of a meatball. 

Making Mini Meat Pies for party appetizers

Top with another pie crust circle and using a fork, crimp edges to seal.

Baking Sheet with Mini Barbecue Meat Pies

Place on a lined baking sheet about 2 inches apart. 

How to make Meat Pie with ground beef

Beat an egg and brush over pie crusts. It will give that gorgeous golden brown color when the meat pies are baked.

Bake for 17-20 minutes until golden brown.

These Mini Barbecue Meat Pies are perfect to make ahead of the party. They can even be made a day ahead, refrigerated and reheated in a 300° oven for 12- 15 minutes before the party.

Mini Barbecue Meat Pies made with Wewalka Pie Crust

Recipe Variations:

You can also bake the meatballs if you don’t want to grill them. I would recommend a 375° oven for about 20 minutes. 

I used Wewalka Pie Crusts for this recipe but you can use this pie crust recipe if you prefer.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chuck 80% lean
  • 1/2 cup old fashioned or quick oats
  • 1/4 cup homemade barbecue sauce
  • 2 eggs divided use
  • 1 onion diced
  • 3 large garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tablespoon Mrs Dash Extra Spicy or other 5 pepper seasoning blend
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 unbaked pie crusts
  • 1/3 cup flour for cutting pie crust
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  • Add ground chuck, oats, 1 egg, onion, garlic and barbecue sauce to a bowl.
