Black Eyed Peas are the traditional southern meal for New Year’s Day. I grew up with this tradition but haven’t exactly carried it on. We went through the bank drive through a few days ago and our bank was handing out packages of dried black eyed peas.

We took it as a sign that it was time to make and share this southern classic comfort food with y’all. Cooking black eyed peas from scratch is actually pretty easy in the slow cooker and I have some special ingredients that take this recipe to over the top amazing.

Do You Have to Soak Black Eyed Peas?

You will lessen your cooking time if you choose to soak your black eyed peas. I soaked mine in cold water for an hour but you don’t have to soak them for 6-8 hours, especially if you are using the slow cooker.

How to Make Crock Pot Black Eyed Peas:

How to Soak Black Eyed Peas

  • Place black eyed peas into a bowl and cover with cold water. Set aside for 1 hour.

  • Add olive oil, onions and garlic to a large skillet and cook on medium-low heat until caramelized.
  • Add smoked turkey and bacon and cook on low 5 minutes.
  • Stir red pepper flakes and black pepper.
  • Add ham bone to crock pot.
  • Add bacon and onion mixture.

  • Taste black eyed peas to test tenderness and flavor for salt.

This is no ordinary tasteless pot of peas, the smoky ham, turkey and bacon gives these peas the most amazing flavor. Of course if you don’t have all three, any smoked meat will give your black eyed peas tremendous flavor.

Best Slow Cooker for Cooking Beans and Peas:

Making these in the slow cooker is so simple. This is the slow cooker I use for everything and it’s so affordable. And this is a great cast iron skillet for cornbread.

I do recommend adding the caramelized onions and garlic, totally worth the effort for that extra bit of flavor. I grew up on this sort of comfort food and I’m finding myself craving it more and more.

We also love these Black Eyed Peas with Shrimp and Clams, it’s so hearty and has amazing flavor. This recipe is cooked on the stove top but could easily be adapted to the slow cooker.

Just like a pot of Purple Hull Peas with Boudin or  my mom’s homemade chicken and dumplings, it just tastes so good on a cold winters day. Add in a pan of my skillet cornbread and you are in for some hearty, down home comfort food.

I can totally understand why this is called soul food, so warming and comforting. Seriously good for the soul.

My Slow Cooker Black Beans cooked with a ham bone are also pretty killer when you are craving comfort food. After making our traditional Peach and Ginger Glazed Ham for the holidays, I always make sure to freeze the ham bone for black eyed peas or a big pot of beans.

We grew a huge crop of black beans in our garden and hope to get some peas planted this year. I think we waited too long to plant last year and we had lots of vines but no peas. If you have gardening tips on growing peas, I’d love to hear them.
