Margaritas

Margaritas are the classic tequila cocktail and so simple to make at home. Mix them up by the glass or pitcher with just 4 ingredients for the best tequila cocktails. 

Easy cocktail recipes are my favorite and it doesn’t get any easier than a classic margarita. If you want mix things up try a  tropical twist with a pitcher our favorite Pineapple Margaritas.

Margaritas originated in Mexico in the 1940’s and over time became one of the most popular cocktails here in the US. They are my absolute best to serve with chips and salsa.

Ingredients for Margaritas.

Ingredients Needed

  • Tequila ~ Use your favorite brand of silver tequila. 
  • Triple Sec ~ Orange liqueur.
  • Lime Juice ~ Freshly squeezed works best for the best tasting drinks.
  • Simple Syrup ~ Made with equal parts sugar and boiling water.

Optional Garnishes: Flake Salt, Lime Slices, Honey, Coarse Sugar, Tajin (chili – lime seasoning).

Step By Step Directions

STEP 1 Prep the glasses by running a slice of lime around the edges. Sprinkle flake salt onto a small plate and dip the rim into the salt. Fill about 3/4 full of crushed ice.

Add ice cubes to a cocktail shaker.

STEP 2 Pour tequila into the cocktail shaker. 

Pouring triple sec into a cocktail shaker.

STEP 3 Add the triple sec. 

Lime juice poured into a cocktail shaker.

STEP 4 Add the lime juice.

Pouring simple syrup into a cocktail shaker.

STEP 5 Next, add the simple syrup. 

STEP 6 Cover and shake vigorously until the shaker is well chilled.

STEP 7 Strain into the prepared glasses.

STEP 8 Garnish with a slice of lime. 

How to Make a Pitcher of Margaritas

Pour tequila, triple sec, lime juice and simple syrup into a pitcher. Mix well and serve over ice. 

Tips and Variations

Make Ahead: Mix ingredients and refrigerate up to 2 days. Freeze in a zip top bag up to 3 months. 

Make Margarita Mocktails: Substitute Sprite for the tequila.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces tequila
  • 2 ounces fresh lime juice
  • 2 ounces triple sec
  • 2 ounces simple syrup
  • Ice: cubes and crushed
  • Lime slices for optional garnish
  • Flake Salt for optional garnish

Instructions

  • Prep the glasses by running a slice of lime around the edges. Sprinkle flake salt onto a small plate and dip the rim into the salt. Fill about 3/4 full of crushed ice.
  • Add ice cubes to a cocktail shaker. 
  • Pour tequila, triple sec, lime juice and simple syrup into the cocktail shaker. 
  • Cover and shake vigorously until the shaker is well chilled. 
  • Strain into the prepared glasses. 
  • Garnish with a slice of lime. 

Notes

For a Pitcher of Margaritas:

Multiply ingredients by 4. Add ingredients to a pitcher and mix well. Serve over ice.
Make Ahead: Mix ingredients and refrigerate up to 2 days. Freeze in a zip top bag up to 3 months. 
Margarita Mocktails: Substitute Sprite or club soda for the tequila.
