  • Apple Cider – Find it in the juice isle or the produce isle, near the apples. This is not vinegar, it is spiced apple juice.
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Granulated Sugar – for the batter and topping.
  • Brown Sugar
  • Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Ground Cardamom – find it in the spice isle at your local grocery store or from amazon.
  • Ground Nutmeg
  • Ground Cinnamon – for the batter and topping.
  • Salt
  • Buttermilk – Use a buttermilk substitute if you don’t it on hand.
  • Butter – melted for the batter and topping. I use salted butter, but unsalted works well too.
  • Large Egg

Step-by-Step Instructions for Mini Apple Cider Donuts

  1. Reduce Apple Cider: Pour apple cider into a small pan and cook over medium-high heat until reduced to 1/4 cup. Set aside.
  2. Preheat: If using a donut maker, preheat. If using a donut pan, grease it well with butter, shortening or non-stick baking spray and preheat the oven.
  3. Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together all purpose flour, ground cardamom, ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon and salt. Set aside.
  4. Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, brown sugar, buttermilk, melted butter and egg. Then whisk in the reduced apple cider.
  5. Combine: Mix the dry ingredients into the apple cider mixture, just until combined, don’t over mix.

  1. Fill the Pan: Spoon or using a piping bag to fill the donut cavities of the mini donut maker or donut pans, filling only about 3/4 full.
  2. Bake: Close the mini donut maker lid and cook about 2 minutes. For the mini donut pan, bake 6-8 minutes and for a full size donut pan, bake 10 minutes. A toothpick inserted in the donuts will come out clean when they are done.
  3. Cool: Remove donuts to a wire rack and repeat with remaining donut batter.

  1. Make the Topping: Melt more butter in a small skillet. In a medium size bowl, combine granulated sugar and ground cinnamon.
  2. Brush donuts on both sides with melted butter.
  3. Roll donuts in cinnamon sugar mixture and return to the wire rack.
  4. Serve immediately.

Storing Baked Donuts

  • Storage: Store cooled donuts in a zip top bag or airtight container at room temperature up to 3 days or in the refrigerator up to 5 days. Freeze in a single layer up to 3 months.

    1. Your recipe instructions never included using the baking powder or baking soda so in the process I never even put them in there and my donuts turned out odd.
