Blackberry Mint Julep

Blackberry Mint Julep a southern twist on the classic Kentucky Derby cocktail.
Blackberry Mint Julep Cocktail #FourRosesOkay it’s confession time…. I have a new favorite cocktail.  I’m ready for the Kentucky Derby with the Blackberry Mint Julep, I just need a polka dot dress and a great big hat.

There are blackberry bushes growing in so many of the fence rows in Oklahoma and they are blooming.  I have been keeping my eye on them so I can make blackberry pies.  I looove blackberries.

Four Roses Blackberry Mint Julep Cocktail

I’m impatient so I picked up a package of fresh blackberries at the market.  I also added some peppermint plants to my container garden this weekend.  Now all I needed for a mint julep was the Kentucky Bourbon.  Well, lucky me received a few samples of Four Roses Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey to try this week.   I love my job.

I made a simple syrup, which was so stinking easy that I can’t believe I have never done it before!  You cook equal parts of sugar and water, bring it to a boil, simmer until the sugar melts.  Seriously simple.

Blackberry Mint Julep Recipe

I added the fresh blackberries and a few sprigs of mint to my sugar water, simmered, cooled and holy moly was it ever good.   When added to crushed ice and a nice shot of Four Roses Bourbon it will blow your cocktail loving mind.

My husband was of course skeptical, he thinks adding fruit to whiskey is the ruination of good whiskey, but he did like the Blackberry Mint Julep.

We sat on the porch sipping our Blackberry Mint Juleps and watched for storms.  With the Kentucky Derby coming up this weekend, it will be the perfect excuse for me to make these again!
