- 2 pounds tri-tip steaks
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 tablespoons Steak Rub or favorite Steak Seasoning
- 1 pound mushrooms we used portabella and white mushrooms
- 1/2 cup butter
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme
Prepare a grill fire to 400° using pecan or hickory for smoke flavor.
Pat steaks dry with paper towels and place on a sheet pan.Coat both sides with olive oil and dry rub.
Wash the mushrooms and slice in half.
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat and add minced garlic. Cook for about 2 minutes until garlic becomes fragrant. Stir in mushrooms. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally until mushrooms start to brown. Add fresh thyme and keep warm until steaks are ready.
Cook steaks on the grill with the lid closed for about 5 minutes.
Turn steaks and continue to cook until desired doneness is reached using a digital thermometer to test. We cooked ours to 125° and rested for 10 minutes before serving.
Remove steaks to a serving platter with garlic butter mushrooms.
Internal Temperature for Tri-Tip Steaks:
- Medium Rare: 140°
- Medium: 155°
Seasoning: We used our favorite homemade steak rub recipe but any steak seasoning will work.
Stove Top Directions: Use a grill pan or cast iron skillet. Preheat the pan over high heat. Coat the pan with olive oil and sear steaks for 4 minutes, flip the steaks and lower heat to medium. Continue to cook until desired temperature is reached using a digital thermometer.
Storage: Store leftover steaks and mushrooms in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 4 days.
Reheat: Slice steak and cook in a skillet coated in butter or olive oil with mushrooms over medium heat. Stir often until heated through.
