Breakfast Strata

Breakfast Strata is an easy egg, ham and cheese breakfast casserole topped with bacon! Perfect for holiday mornings or a weekend brunch. Easy to prep in the evening and bake in the morning.

Ingredients

  • 10 slices stale bread I used brioche
  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 3 cups shredded smoked gouda cheese
  • 2 cups diced smoked ham
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 8 slices cooked and crumbled bacon
  • tops of 2 green onions for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Butter one side of each slice of bread. 
  • Cut each slice into quarters and place half of bread, butter side down, in a 9 x 13 inch casserole dish.
  • Top with half of cheddar and smoked gouda cheese.
  • Sprinkle diced ham in an even layer over cheese.
  • Add second layer of bread to fill pan, butter side down. 
  • Top with remaining cheese. 
  • In a bowl, combine eggs, milk and cream.
  • Whisk in Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, paprika, salt, pepper, onion powder and dry mustard. 
  • Pour egg mixture over casserole evenly. 
  • Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate 6- 8 hours or overnight. 
  • Preheat oven to 325°.
  • Remove plastic wrap and sprinkle cooked and crumbled bacon over casserole.
  • Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes or until casserole is set. 
  • Allow to cool 10 minutes before serving. 
  • Garnish with sliced green onion tops and fresh parsley if desired.
