Gin Basil Smash ~ Easy Gin Cocktail

Gin cocktails are becoming more and more popular once again and the combination of citrus basil and gin is sure to be an instant favorite.

What kind of liquor is Gin?

Gin is a distilled alcoholic beverage that is made with juniper berries, herbs and botanicals. It pairs best with citrus flavors, cucumber and mint. A few common brands of Gin are Tanqueray, Beefeater, Bombay Saphire and Gordons.

Ingredients Needed:

  • London Dry Gin ~ We used Tanqueray, use your favorite.
  • Simple Syrup ~ Made with equal parts sugar and hot water. Stir until dissolved.
  • Lemon Juice
  • Fresh Basil leaves
  • Ice

How to Make Gin Basil Smash Cocktails:

  • Add basil leaves to a cocktail shaker and smash using a muddler or the end of a wooden spoon. This will release the oils and flavors of the fresh basil into the cocktail.

  • Use a jigger to measure the gin and pour over the basil leaves.

  • Next, add the simple syrup.

  • Add the lemon juice. 
  • Fill the shaker with ice.

  • Cover and shake vigorously.

  • Strain into two glasses and garnish with fresh basil and a bit of lemon peel if desired.
  • Serve over crushed ice if preferred.

Ingredients

  • 8 Basil Leaves plus more for garnish
  • 4 ounces Dry London Gin
  • 3 ounces simple syrup recipe in notes
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice save peel for optional garnish
  • ice

Instructions

  • In a cocktail shaker, smash the basil leaves using a muddler or end of wooden spoon.
  • Add the gin, simple syrup and lemon juice. Fill with ice.
  • Cover and shake vigorously.
  • Strain into 2 glasses.
  • Add crushed ice if desired. Garnish with basil and lemon peel.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

For Simple Syrup: Combine equal parts boiling water with sugar. Stir until dissolved. Chill before using in cocktails. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container up to 3 weeks.
