Irish Soda Bread

Irish Soda Bread is the perfect compliment to a hearty Irish Beef Stew or to have on hand to enjoy with butter and honey. This makes a small loaf and is a simple quick bread that doesn't require any yeast.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour + 1/4 cup for shaping and dusting
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°.
  • In a large bowl add 2 cups of flour, baking soda, salt and sugar. Mix to combine.
  • Add buttermilk, butter and egg. Use a fork to combine, breaking the butter into pea size pieces.
  • Pour the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead into a 6 inch circle. Lightly dust the top of the dough with flour.
  • Place on a greased or lined baking pan. 
  • Use a sharp knife to cut an X into the dough, about 1/4 inch deep. 
  • Bake for 30- 35 minutes until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  • Cool slightly, slice and serve with butter.

Notes

  • Add- Ins: 1/2 cup raisins or currants
  • Storage: Store at room temperature, wrapped in plastic wrap up to 2 days. To freeze, wrap in 2 layers of plastic wrap and a layer of foil. Freeze up to 2 months.
  • Reheat: Lightly toast slices and enjoy with butter. Add honey or jam for a sweet treat.
