St.Patrick’s Day is coming up this week and what better way to celebrate than with a little Irish soda bread?  What better ingredients for Irish soda bread than Irish butter and cheese?  I know you are going to love this bread.  I browned the butter and it really gave the bread a nutty flavor and the aged cheddar cheese gives it a little bite.  The house smelled unbelievable while I was baking it.

I really love all of the Kerrygold products, the butter is the finest I’ve used.  I get so excited when I can find it at the local markets!  I’m sure the checkout girls always think I’m a little over zealous about butter a.k.a CRAZY!

How do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?  Do you fix a traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner or do you go out on the town for some Guinness?

I will be celebrating by watching cows and hoping I remember to wear green so my kids aren’t trying to pinch me all day!  How ever you choose to celebrate you must bake this bread!  It is sure to bring you some of that good Irish luck!

Kerrygold Irish Browned Butter & Cheddar Soda Bread


  • 6 tablespoons Kerrygold Irish butter
  • 1 garlic clove, grated
  • 4 cups all purpose flour plus 1 tablespoon for dusting loaves
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup Kerrygold Aged  Cheddar Cheese, shredded
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Cooking Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

In a small pot or saucepan add butter and melt over low heat, stirring occasionally.  After about 2 minutes add grated garlic and continue to cook butter until browned bits have formed.  Watch it carefully and stir so you do not burn the garlic, this is very important as the if it burns it will taste bitter. Remove from heat.

While butter is browning, add flour, salt, baking soda, and sugar to a large bowl and stir to combine.  Stir in cheese

Add browned butter into buttermilk and stir to combine. Pour into flour mixture mixing until thoroughly combined.

Divide dough in half and flatten to about 2 inches thick, dust each with flour.  Make slashes in the top of each loaf with a sharp knife. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until loaves are browned and cooked through.

Serve with a good slathering of Kerrygold butter.
