I am always thrilled when a new cookbook arrives in my mailbox. It is usually met with eye rolls from the boys, but I don’t pay too much attention to them while I tear open the package like it’s Christmas morning.
As you know fall is super busy on the ranch as we sort and wean and ship our calves. I have several home improvement projects started that I am still hoping to finish soon. What I’m trying to say is that there has just been a ton of things going on. I would love to have shared a recipe out of each of these cookbooks, but I’m just not getting it all done!
I decided to make one post and tell you about a few of my recent favorites and I get to give away a copy of each one! That’s 4 chances to win a great cookbook!
First up is Fire in My Belly by Kevin Gillespie with David Joachim (Andrews McMeel Publishing, LLC.) Kevin is one of my favorite chefs from Top Chef. I love his southern approach to the food he cooks. This cookbook is filled with his fresh approach recipes from the classics to the food you thought you hated to junk food. I want to try so many of the 120 recipes! This cookbook is described on the inside cover as hip but the recipes are totally accessible with tons of photos.
The seasonal recipes encourage us to seek out locally grown food and y’all know how much I love that! Kevin even includes a section in the back of the cookbook for local, sustainable products nationwide, along with sources for ingredients and equipment.
Topping my list to try would be Grilled Strip Loin with Balsamic Onions & Horseradish Potatoes, Shrimp Stuffed Pan-Fried Catfish, and Salmon Croquettes, oh and every single recipe from the Junk Food Chapter!
Click here for the recipe for Cast-Iron Skillet Chicken with Farro & Brussels Sprouts & Warm Banana Pudding from Fire in My Belly.
Next up is Southern Comfort, A New Take on the Recipes We Grew Up With by Allison Vines-Rushing and Slade Rushing (Ten Speed Press). I have to be honest with you, I fell in love with this book immediately. I was mesmerized by the introduction titled Our Story. A tale of two chefs falling in love in New York, returning to their roots and their love of food that couldn’t even be conquered by Hurricane Katrina. They have overcome the set backs of a hurricane and now have two restaurants and this lovely cookbook.
Southern Comfort is one of those cookbooks that I will continue to keep pouring through finding something that inspires me to get in the kitchen and cook. You will find in Southern Comfort that the storys and the food go hand and hand and these are the types of cookbooks that make it to my favorites list. Ed Anderson provides the stunning photos.
Some of the recipes I am eyeing are Pimento Cheese Croquettes (apparently I can’t resist a good croquette!), New Orleans-Style Barbecue Lobster (on the cover – to die for!), and Coffee Roasted Pork Loin. There are classics like King Ranch Chicken, Creamed Collards, and Tomato Soup. You will also love the section of Basics in the back for broths, mayonnaise, Pepper Vinegar, Creole Spice and more. Southern Comfort has 100 mouthwatering recipes for what I call down home cooking, I’m really loving it.
150 Best Grilled Cheese Sandwiches by Alison Lewis (Robert Rose Inc.)is taking the classic sandwich of our childhoods to a whole new level! I recently read that Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are among the top food trends to watch out for, now it doesn’t get any more fun or delicious than that!
I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for Alison Lewis. I love her blog, Ingredients, Inc.; she is an amazing recipe developer and has a resume that makes my head spin.
I can’t wait to try the Grilled Pepper Jack, Arugula and Sprouts, Lasagna Grilled Cheese, and Grilled Steak and Blue Cheese. That all sounds amazing and so far beyond my standard American cheese with a little garlic salt! There are also great recipes for chutneys, salsas, pesto, hummus and many more interesting condiments. Don’t forget dessert! There are some amazing dessert grilled cheese sandwiches like Blackberry & Brie and Pear Ricotta Panini.
These recipes are so simple yet so delicious and there is truly something for everyone. I think I may have to have a Grilled Cheese Party! Sounds fun doesn’t it!
And last but certainly not least! I have Ready for Dessert, My Best Recipes by David Lebovitz (Ten Speed Press). You are going to love this cookbook, it has over 170 dessert recipes that are guaranteed to knock your socks off.
David Lebovitz is the dessert guru. His recipes are spot on, simple and they are really easy to make. The cookies, pies, tarts, cakes, brownies, ice creams and more will make you a dessert rock star. Your family and friends will be begging for more.
You think I’m kidding? I’m not! On the top of my list to try: Freestyle Lemon Tartlets with White Chocolate Sauce, Chocolate Pots de Creme (with more chocolate than usual!), and the Black & White Cookies. Black & White Cookies are new to me. I received some from New York City as a gift and I really struggled to share them with the boys. They were the best things ever!
There are wonderful tips and with David’s guidance you will be rocking the dessert table in no time!
All of these cookbooks will be valued in your collection and with the holidays coming up, keep these in mind for the cooks on your list. The publishers have agreed to provide a copy of each for giveaway. YAY!

Ready for Dessert!
Wow so much good food to choose from, I think I’d like the Grilled Cheese though as I have a younger son
who’s a bit picky. I have heard to try a favorite food of theirs and expand on it to get picky kids to eat different stuff. Worth a try right.
