Mom’s Oatmeal & Coach’s Oats Review

by Milisa on August 23, 2011

Mom's Oatmeal

When my folks come to visit, my Mom makes me breakfast every morning and it’s this oatmeal.  I loved instant oatmeal growing up but it has lost its appeal to me and I never, ever take the time to cook oats.  Mom’s oatmeal is creamy and delicious with tons of flavor plus oats are so filling and good for you.  Just great for school mornings.  Mom always uses old fashioned oats, which take forever to cook.  The good news is I have discovered the perfect oats, Coach’s Oats! Have you tried them?  I am currently lobbying my sister-in-law, who owns the local grocery store (HINT, HINT CINDY) to start carrying the Coach’s Oats.

With Coach’s Oats, you get the texture and flavor of steel cut oats with the convenience of rolled oats due to their “cracked and toasted” process.  I can have these oats ready in three and a half minutes.  It takes at least that long for my boys to pull their jeans and cowboy boots on and I can have a hot breakfast in front of them.  The texture is unlike any oats I’ve tried before, they are not slimy in the least and the flavor is excellent.  You will be adding whole grains to your kids diets and they will not even realize how good it is for them!  Find Coach’s Oats and buy them, I promise you will not be disappointed!  You should also read their story, it’s a great one!

On another note, those of you who have read about Jennie Perillo suddenly loosing her husband to a heart attack just a few weeks ago, would you like to help?  I am offering two sets of my flour sack towels to those of you who would like to donate to the fund set up by Bloggers With Out Borders.  It is designed to help with the financial needs of Jennie and her girls.  What ever you can donate 25 cents or 25 dollars, any amount is fine.  The link takes you to Paypal where you can donate with by bank transfer avoiding the fees that come with credit cards.  Come back here and leave a comment, letting me know that you donated and I will enter your name for a set of towels.  I will randomly select 2 winners, who can choose the set they would like to receive.  Thanks for helping out.

Mom’s Oatmeal

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Coach’s Oats
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 2 tablespoons walnuts, toasted or candied

Cooking Directions:

In a medium, microwave safe bowl combine oats and water.  Cook for 3 1/2 minutes. (Or cook in a saucepan on stove top over medium high heat, stirring often, about 5 minutes.)  Carefully remove from microwave, the bowl will likely be hot.  Add butter, brown sugar and cinnamon stirring until butter is melted.  Pour into two bowls and garnish each with half of cranberries and walnuts.

*substitute other fruits and nuts to suit, it’s all good!

Yield: 2 servings

Enjoy!

*fine print: I was given samples of the Coach’s Oats to review.  I was not paid for the review and all opinions are honest and all my own.

I love steel cut oats. Coach’s Oats is good brand. I especially love that I can buy them at Costco for a fraction of the cost for standard steel cut oats. (How’s that for sounding like a commercial? Sheesh)

So, the walnuts in your oatmeal look candied. In which case, this just might be the most delicious bowl of oatmeal ever. I have never even thought to put my candied nuts in oatmeal. YUM! I’m so going to try this over the holidays. I don’t dare keep candied nuts in the house the rest of the year!
