Chocolate Gravy

Maybe chocolate gravy sounds a little crazy, but I love it, my kids love it and as far as I know everyone that tries it, loves it.  Imagine warm chocolate pudding.  My great-grandmother made this with canned biscuits and my mom always made it with homemade biscuits.  It is a real treat, your kids will beg for you to make this again and again.  Not really calorie friendly, but extra yummy!

Ingredients:

3 cups milk

1/4 cup cocoa powder

1/3 cup sugar

1/3 cup all purpose flour

dash salt

2 tablespoon butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

Cooking Directions:

Melt 1 tablespoon butter, add cocoa, stirring until a paste is formed.  In a small bowl, mix flour and sugar together and add to paste a little at a time, alternating with milk, stirring constantly.  Bring to a boil and stir until thick.  Remove from heat and stir in 1 tablespoon butter and vanilla.  Serve over warm biscuits.

Enjoy!

I saw this link over at your biscuit post and had to come check it out. My wife’s family grew up with something similar; her Volga German grandma used to bake the remainder of any bierock dough as rolls resting upon a makeshift chocolate sauce/pudding. I know it was a dish concocted from necessity to use up the bread; gotta wonder if the two ideas evolved mutually or if they came form the same place and there was some sort of divergence. Local food history’s always a bit of a mystery. Thanks for the link!

Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy – my country grandma made them for me every morning when I was a kid. Thank you for sharing this!
